The Emerald Avenue® Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus ‘JFS-KW1CB’ PP 22814) is a medium-sized, brutish ornamental tree. It has a pyramid-shaped crown with a very upright form and a dense branching habit. Its dark green, sharp-toothed, ovate foliage turns golden-yellow in the fall. It is known for its strong, stout central leader, very sturdy branches, and heat tolerance. It also has the distinctive smooth, gray hornbeam bark with muscle-like fluting.

\nThe Emerald Avenue® Hornbeam was introduced by Keith Warren of J. Frank Schimdt & Son Co. in 2011. This cultivar was selected for its vigorous growth, heat tolerance, stout trunk and strong upright branches. It is able to hold its dark green color all through the summer in hot conditions better than any other hornbeam. It is a great choice as a hedging tree, wind or privacy screen, or as a street tree. It does well in full or partial sun and can grow in a variety of soil types.
