The Dakota Pinnacle® Birch (Betula platyphylla ‘Fargo’) is a medium-sized, ornamental tree. It is best known for its upright columnar form made up of dark green, pointy leaves that turn bright yellow in the fall. It is also well regarded for its smooth white bark that exfoliates in maturity, making it an excellent winter landscape tree. This tree will certainly catch your eye in the landscape.
The Dakota Pinnacle® Birch was introduced by the University of Dakota. It was selected in 1986 from open-pollinated Asian White Birches (Betula platyphylla). This cultivar is unique in its improved hardiness and drought tolerance compared to its parent species. It is a great choice as a yard tree or a street tree due to its ornamental value, very narrow form and tolerance to urban pollution (though should not be planted under power lines). Also mixes well with evergreen trees. It does well in partial or full sun and can withstand a variety of soil types.
