The Autumn Blaze® Maple (Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffersred’) is a medium- to large-sized, fast-growing shade tree. It has an upright, dense, ovate shaped canopy that is quite pleasing and can compliment a variety of different landscapes accordingly. Its deeply cut, 5-lobed foliage is a medium green in the spring and summer and, as the name suggests, erupts into a display of scarlet and crimson in the fall. The bark of this tree is also valued during the bare winter months with its smooth, fine brown appearance that becomes furrowed with age.

\nThe Autumn Blaze® Maple is a cultivar of a Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and Silver Maple (Acer saacharinum) hybrid. This is an older cultivar and was discovered by Glenn Jeffers in the late 1960s. It takes its attractive form and impressive fall foliage color from Red Maple, and its growth rate and adaptability from Silver Maple. It serves very well as a pretty shade tree in a yard or park or as a street tree due to its upright form. It grows well in partial or full sun and tolerates most soils but prefers well-drained soils on the moist side.
