The Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis) is a small- to medium-sized, cold-hardy flowering tree. It has a broad, rounded canopy with a compact branching habit made up of handsome, dark olive green compound leaves that appear in 5-7 leaflets. In early summer, dense panicles of pea-like white flowers emerge and stand up straight. They are a sight to see and give off a nice, aromatic fragrance as well as attract pollinators. After the bloom is the emergence of flat seed pods that are 2-3 inches long. It also has significant winter interest, sporting exfoliating coppery-bronze bark that curls and peels off the trunk.
The Amur Maackia is native to Eastern Russia, northeast China, and Korea. It makes a great street tree where its canopy has room to spread. It also is suited for lawns as a pretty shade tree. If space for human traffic or sitting to enjoy the shade is desired, its lower branches are best pruned early in its life because it may take a while to heal over the pruning wound in maturity. It is best grown in full sun and will take to many soil types as long as they are somewhat moist.
